Movies: Butterfly (1 Comment)
Butterfly, a HK film, stars Josie Ho, Tian Yuan, Eric Kot, Isabel Chan, and Joman Chiang. The movie was only released last year.
One thing’s for sure, I’m glad there’s a plot rather than a flick full of lesbo sex. The DVD cover seemed to convey a hidden meaning. Or it could be my “wild” imagination. Flavia is a 30-year old mother, wife, and high school teache. She used to have a passionate with Jin, a female classmate of hers in the late 1980s. Her mom soon found out and forced Flavia to choose between her or JIn. The relationship of the two dissolved there. After many years, Flavia finds out that was already a nun and resides at Macau. A sudden encounter with a young singer/composer runaway, named Yip, awakened her — the deepest desire that she hid for many years. Butterfly is a struggle of a woman among the problems of family and students, her true self, and what she really wants.
The movie almost went for 2 hours with barely any dialogues and too many flashbacks. If it weren’t for repetitive flashbacks, the movie wouldn’t go that long. There were also some scenes unnecessary. It was understood that Flavia had things going on with her family. Director Mak didn’t have to add the scene where her family came over and her siblings asked her to stop their parents from divorcing. The movie started out well though. I didn’t expect to see some lesbian action early. That’s one of the reasons I continued the movie. Only from the middle part did it become draggy. I like the scene when she finally talked to Jin. You can really see how Flavia missed her. I was really saddened when Jin told her never to come again. I’m sure that Flavia still had lingering feelings for Jin. They weren’t able to say proper goodbyes after all. But Jin had moved on and so should Flavia. The ending’s so-so. I was okay with it, but my brother wasn’t. Aside from the repetitive flashbacks, Flavia and Yip’s make-out weren’t very convincing.
